I once saw a comet enter the atmosphere

A couple years ago, I was camping with 3 friends of mine, indulging on psilocybin, entranced by the elements of nature. Without light pollution the stars shined brightly, dotting the entire sky like freckles across skin.

We sat by the water, the waves calm but softly crashing upon the shore. The sand soft between toes, cool, and a small breeze blew my hair away from my shoulders. Frogs leaped along the edge of the water, splashing, while fish rippled the surface. We told stories, a couple jokes, but I could not get my eyes off of the stars. It felt comforting, like a home I had never seen, or at least hadn’t remembered. The tiny fireballs above wrapped around me like a warm blanket, filling me with hope and dissipating a longing that never seemed to fade. Across the fallen trunks we carefully followed until we reached the end. The balancing act of everything in order, everything in stillness, everything exactly the way it should be. We were the only ones here, the only ones left, just awaiting the spaceship to come take us away and back to a home we’d been yearning for all this time. We wrote our names in the sand to be washed away with our footprints, and only noticed by the moonlight. Like we never existed.

I sat upon the sand once again.

Hands dug in and a mind full of wonder.
